About Odyssey
Mission Statement
Odyssey is dedicated to providing a weekly cottage school experience in the philosophy and methods of Charlotte Mason, where students learn in community, and families receive support in their pursuit of a living education.
Philosophy
As a Charlotte Mason cottage school, we adhere to Charlotte Mason’s educational philosophy, as detailed in her six volumes. It is highly recommended that parents familiarize themselves with Mason’s body of work. Particularly useful to a foundational understanding of this philosophy and method are Volumes I (Home Education), III (School Education), and VI (Philosophy of Education). Membership at Odyssey requires participation in mothers’ book discussion, see options below. See also Appendix C of handbook for more Parents’ Education Resources.
Faith
Odyssey is a Christian organization, in that it’s teachers and leaders are followers of Jesus Christ. Students and families attending Odyssey are not required to claim a specific faith or denomination; and we do not teach religion. However, as themes of truth, beauty, and goodness emerge in our school books and subjects, our teachers will promote their exploration among our students. If a regularly-occurring book or subject makes families uncomfortable on these grounds, parents will be able to arrange for their student to sit out. Please be in communication with your students’ teachers if you have concerns in this area.
Objectives
At Odyssey, our objectives are as follows:
To provide a day of lessons in alignment with Charlotte Mason’s philosophy, methods, timetables, scope, and breadth.
To support homeschool families in their pursuit of a living education by sharing the load once per week.
To further mothers’ education in allowing them a glimpse of Miss Mason’s methods in action in a variety of ages and subjects.
To provide community for moms through either monthly or bi-weekly book discussions.
To allow Charlotte Mason teachers invaluable experience in managing a classroom on CM’s principles and methods.
